This is my first post. I would like to share my experience in the final year project review conducted by Anna University. I am a final year student from IT department in a reputed college. I had an opportunity to do my final year project in National Advanced Center for IPv6 in Universiti Sains Malaysia. My project is based a very new protocol called OpenFlow about which I will be posting later.For the project I stayed in Malaysia for nearly 3 months and spent so much of money and efforts. Following is what happened during my review!
My project title: Deploying OpenFlow in Android devices for Optimized Network Access.
The review was just begun.
Me: The purpose of my project is enable dynamic swift between the various network interfaces available.
My External Examiner: See, I am having an aircel sim card in my mobile. I am using it now in Kodambakkam. When I move to Ashok Nagar, it will automatically connect to that tower know? What you have done new in this?
Me:??????? after few seconds, Sir, I mean the Internet connections. For example, WiFI, WiMAX, 3G!
My External Examiner: oh! okay okay! carry on!
After few slides,
Me: The OpenFlow protocol helps to isolate the Traffic
My External Examiner Traffic?What your project has to do with Traffic??
Me(Shocked): Sir, it is Data Traffic!
My External Examiner: oh, I got it!
After two slides with 5 more slides to go,
My External Examiner: okay okay enough!
Me: yes sir.
My External Examiner what is this? Will you call this as a report? Where is the analysis? where is the Architecture? What you have done for the report! It is nothing! It is waste!
Me: I have clearly explained everything in Framework part sir.
My External Examiner: That and all I dont need! Where is the Diagram?
Me: It is an ongoing project sir. So I cannot have a diagram till I finish it!
My External Examiner: No no, the mark is only the Diagram! I am going to give you only minimum marks for this report! It is nothing! Now go!
Me: Sir, you can have some considerations! I told you the reason!
My External Examiner: No no, no way! Go! Go!
And one punniyavathi came and told us that she cannot do anything for our grades and we deserve to be treated like this!
This is the present scenario! You will have an examiner who don't even what is a network interface and confuse that with mobile services providers and dont know what a traffic in networking means but he will question you about the documentation that you gonna throw away!
Now people, What the hell is this? What for we are having the review? What is the main goal behind having a project for final semester?
The purpose of having a project for the final year students is long lost! It is always seen a weapon that can be used against the students! Students will be asked to pay their fines and dues amount when they are about to enter for their review! or else they wont be allowed!
How many changes the student is asked to make in the report? What is a report used for? It is a collection of what we have did towards the project! I dont why this report and record are always given importance rather the Project and the Programs? Who is responsible for this?
Through my entire presentation, My External Examiner has listened to that hardly for 2 minutes! And during that 2 minutes he asked very silly questions! Why should we take in so much effort and energy to do a project? What is the scope of the project in today's Engineering colleges? If you present a very neat documentation for a nothing-worth project, you can get good marks! Silly!
What ever happens, this is not going to change! Again next year, somewhere my juniors will be posting a similar thing! We need Change! When it will happen? Silly things to continue? Think!
